17th Street Atelier

I have been teaching at Parson’s the New School for Design for the last few years.  I have worked with many artists in my classes that have been interested in learning more about drawing and painting than I have been able to teach in the university setting.   In 2005, I began teaching a few young artists privately in the studio of Judith Shampaine, at 22 East 17th Street in NYC.  Judith has provided us with studio space and the opportunity to develop an intimate atelier environment.  I teach from September to May.

At the 17th Street Atelier, I work with six to seven artists a year.  The first year is dedicated to drawing simple form as well as drawing from the plaster cast.  The second and third years are dedicated to learning color theory and working from the figure. I accept students that are highly self motivated, willing to be patient, and dedicated to the hard work that is required to learn the traditions of classical art.  I was taught that greatness is achieved slowly over a long period of time, and that humility is our friend.

I attended the New York Academy of Art, where I studied with Jon DeMartin. Jon introduced me to the traditions of classical art. He also introduced me to the Water Street Atelier, where I studied with  Jacob Collins.  At  Water Street  I learned how to draw and paint the plaster cast.  And, then I was taught how to draw and paint the figure.   Jon also introduced me to the atelier of Michael Aviano, where I learned the principles of structural drawing and color theory.

I am very grateful to have had such wonderful teachers and the opportunities that they have provided for study and travel.  I greatly respect the knowledge of these artists and have tried to pass on to my students, what was passed on to me.

Thank you for your interest in the 17th Street Atelier. And thank you, Judith, for making this possible for all of my dedicated and aspiring young artists.
